Phthalates increase the risk of endocrine disorders in children

Artificial chemicals phthalates, which are contained in high concentrations in hygiene products, lead to serious endocrine disorders and behavioral problems in children aged 4 to 9 years. American neurologists at Cornell University and Mount Sinai Medical School have established this.

Many countries recently have introduced restrictions and bans on the content of phthalates in children's toys. However, doctors note, if the mother used the products, which include phthalates, then the probability of prenatal exposure of chemicals to the children's body is high. Substances can negatively affect tissues and cells through maternal use of cosmetics, perfumes, lotions, and shampoos. Another type of phthalates is added to increase the flexibility and strength of the plastic or is included in the coating composition of medicines and food additives.

The researchers analyzed the concentration of phthalate metabolites in urine samples taken from 404 pregnant women. Subsequently, the children of these mothers were also examined when they were 4 - 9 years old. As a result, children of mothers who had high levels of phthalates during pregnancy were more likely to experience behavioral problems and endocrine disorders than other children. Experts approve that phthalates contribute to chronic problems even before the birth of a child, which will continue throughout his life.
